In order to produce safe and sustainable steel, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is implementing various initiatives based on four pillars: investing in our people, making steel more sustainable, enriching our communities and ensuring transparent governance in our activities.

Investing in our employees
The health and safety of our employees and subcontractors is our number one priority. We have set ourselves an ambitious challenge: to be the safest steel and mining company in the world. In 2013, at group level, we achieved a frequency rate of 0.8 accidents per million hours worked compared to a rate of 1 in 2012. The rate in Luxembourg was 2.14.

A number of our facilities in Luxembourg have an excellent track record of performance: Bissen, Bettembourg, Dudelange, Rodange & Schifflange and the European Logistics Centre all recording zero lost-time accidents in 2013. Other sites posted results that are not as positive. The Maturity Project, an integrated and multi-disciplinary system that was launched by our Belval facility, is one project aiming to optimise performance.

Investing in our employees also means providing them with opportunities to develop their skills. In 2013, our employees received 145,000 hours of training across 311 different courses. We also want to promote diversity within our teams. No less than 53 different nationalities are represented in our Luxembourg entities.

Producing more sustainable steel
Steel is the ultimate renewable resource. Up to 99 % of steel beams can be recovered at the end of a building’s life! With a view to producing steel that is more sustainable, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is investing in research and development, whether in products, procedures or various internal projects.

Our main challenge is to make our production as clean and efficient from an energy standpoint as possible, as we share the ambition to find an appropriate response to climate change. Accordingly, we invested €7 million in optimising our energy consumption in Luxembourg in 2013. Furthermore, our Belval and Differdange facilities obtained ISO 50001 certification, which is the international energy management standard. Lastly, we are a founding member and one of the main sponsors of the Learning Factory, which aims specifically to promote efficient national use of energy.

Enriching our communities
Our business activities in Luxembourg, where we are the country’s largest private employer, also have a significant impact on the communities in which we operate. We provide these communities with several thousand direct and indirect jobs, and sponsor various community development projects in the fields of health and safety, education, and social advancement.

Ensuring transparent governance
Lastly, we want to guarantee a high level of visibility for the company’s decision-making and organisational processes. Applying a transparent governance process is an approach that is deeply rooted in the way we conduct our business, and which leads us to proceed in an ethical manner in everything that we undertake.
