  • H&S Day ArcelorMittal 2017

Needless to say, health and safety is not just an issue for a single day; it is at the heart of all ArcelorMittal employees and contractors’ daily activities throughout the year. In Luxembourg, there more than 4,000 employees involved who take part in this event at their respective locations.

This year, a special focus is being given to "near hits". Experience shows us that when an accident occurs, an in-depth study is carried out regarding the conditions under which it occurred, in order to take the necessary measures to ensure it doesn´t happen again. This involves carrying out the same task, under the same conditions, in order to detect and handle any situations that could lead to an accident or incident. The identification of these dangerous, potentially fatal or serious actions and situations helps to pre-emptively prevent any risk of accidents.

At the industrial sites of Belval, Differdange, Bissen, Dudelange, Dommeldange and Rodange, various theoretical and practical workshops are proposed to the teams so that they can share and learn about potentially risky situations encountered. The administrative sites also get involved in this one-day event by organising activities focused on health and raising awareness about risky situations through virtual reality workshops in driving or moving about at a height.

In 2016, the lost time injury rate for the staff and contractors of ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg was down slightly to a rate of 1.4, compared to 1.07 in 2015. This result encourages us all to be extra vigilant in order to achieve the target of zero accidents within the Group. Roland Bastian, Head of Country Management Luxembourg, explained: “For ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg, as is the case across the group, the health and safety of our employees and subcontractors remains our number one priority. By focusing on "near hits", we can make even greater progress in our results. I am confident that thanks to the commitment of our teams, following on from this event, we can guarantee that everyone returns home safe after their working day".
