The Fondation de Luxembourg surpasses the threshold of 100 foundations created under its aegis
In 2022, the Fondation de Luxembourg created its 100th sheltered foundation, a milestone that confirms Luxembourg's role as a European center for philanthropy.
Other highlights from the Fondation de Luxembourg in 2022:
- Since its creation, more than 75 million euros have been allocated to general interest projects.
- 75% of the support granted in 2022 went to causes in Europe (an increase of almost 20% compared to 2021), of which 47% went to causes in Luxembourg.
- 330 million euros in assets are engaged for philanthropy.
With the creation of its 100th sheltered foundation in early 2022, the Fondation de Luxembourg surpassed a symbolic threshold that, for Henri Grethen, President of the Fondation de Luxembourg, "testifies to the trust that donors seeking to build a long-term philanthropic project have placed in our organization." In addition, the Fondation de Luxembourg received several important bequests in 2022, increasing the assets under its management by 10% in one year, now up to 330 million euros committed to philanthropy. Among the Fondation de Luxembourg donors, 56% are Luxembourg residents and 36% reside in neighboring countries.
These commitments are particularly important in times of crisis, as Tonika Hirdman, Director General, emphasized, "Current instability, such as the outbreak of war on European soil, attests to philanthropy’s value in providing resources, contributing to finding innovative solutions, and providing a source of hope for those in need." For instance, last March, the Fondation de Luxembourg created the Ukraine Solidarity Foundation to channel humanitarian aid to Ukraine, neighboring countries and to victims of the conflict who have taken refuge in Luxembourg. In one year, more than 600,000 € have been channeled for health care, basic necessities, shelter and psychological support.
Other important projects demonstrated the geographical reach of foundations under the aegis of the Fondation de Luxembourg far beyond Europe's borders, such as a multi-year commitment by the Maßvoll Stiftung for life-saving care in a maternity hospital in Khost, Afghanistan, or strengthening the food security of Syrian farmers by providing them with agronomic tools and advice, thanks to the Fondation La Marck.
Of the 330 projects supported by the sheltered foundations in 2022 and covering 52 countries around the world, Europe received the most support in 2022, 75% of all donations, representing a 20% growth since the previous year. Of these donations, almost half (47%) went to projects in Luxembourg, mostly in the health and research sectors, a trend observed since the beginning of the pandemic. Some initiatives financed in Luxembourg include projects for research, prevention, and treatment of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, and cardiovascular diseases, one of the main causes of death in Luxembourg.
In 2023, the Fondation de Luxembourg will strengthen its international reach while remaining faithful to the values that make it a key player in the Luxembourg ecosystem and a platform of expertise for those who wish to make a long-term philanthropic commitment.
