ArcelorMittal reinforces its investments to improve air quality in Differdange

The Differdange steel plant has moved its black slag pits to a specially designed hall to reduce the dust emissions observed during its handling. Following the announcement in January of the addition of a new dust extraction system to its Differdange facilities to reduce its emissions by 80%, the relocation of the black slag pits is the second 100% environmental investment at ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg, which illustrates the Group's desire to answer the expectations of its neighbors and employees.

Originally, the black slag pits were located on the edge of the site, far from the steelworks and close to the neighborhood. An unused hall, located close to the furnace, appeared to be the ideal area to receive the liquid slag safely and sustainably. After three months of conclusive tests, this hall was rehabilitated for this activity. This project involved several significant developments: a road was created, the storage space and pits inside the hall were enlarged, and cladding was installed on the building to insulate it from the outside, all without stopping production.

A new optimal space – with clear advantages

To place the slag pits in a covered hall has the advantage of limiting the main nuisances caused by the pouring of slag. Residents have already noticed that dust emissions have been significantly reduced following the transfer.

Noise pollution has also been reduced by 7 decibels, with the structure of the hall being an acoustic barrier, preventing the propagation of noise related to slag processing.

Internally, the safety of our employees has been reinforced. Indeed, the risk of explosion, which occurs when liquid slag is in contact with pockets of water created by precipitation, is now close to zero. And the immediate proximity of the hall to the steelworks exit has made it possible to optimize the route of slag transport vehicles. They now circulate in a limited and protected area, with the least co-activity and without crossing other vehicles.

This new configuration not only improves safety but also the logistical efficiency of operations.

Like the dust removal project, the relocation of the black slag pits is an investment with a 100% environmental goal. It was carried out with the financial support of the Luxembourg State up to 30%.

According to Pierre Jacobs, CEO of ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg, "The rehabilitation of the hall took place in parallel with another major environmental project already known: the new dust removal system. These two joint initiatives confirm ArcelorMittal's commitment to the environment and to a better quality of life for the neighbors of our facilities. These targeted investments offering innovative tailor-made solutions demonstrate our desire to take into account the expectations of our stakeholders, both internal and external, in the conduct of our industrial activities."
